The biggest question centering Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration was not what the man of the hour had to say, but rather what his wife would wear. Even though Obama was sworn in for a second term, it was hard to discern what we were all celebrating – his presidency or her style. Having stepped out as a trendsetter from the word go in 2009, Michelle Obama is internationally recognized for her memorable fashion choices and impeccable taste.

A Celebration of Michelle Obama’s Retrospective Style

Four years later and the First Lady did not disappoint, appearing before us like a Grecian goddess in a red custom-made halter neck gown by Jason Wu (another do-over!). Wearing the previously unknown designer to Obama’s first inauguration ball as president, Michelle Obama decided to stay true to her Wu-roots by asking him to work his design magic a second time round. Luckily for Wu, the red woven faille coupe gown was a dazzler! Michelle accessorized the fiery ensemble perfectly with a Kimberley McDonald diamond white gold ring and matching kitten heels by Jimmy Choo. All in all, it was an added fashion coup for Mrs Obama- and perfectly timed too.

Another style notable was Beyonce, whose national anthem duties were bumped up from the main inaugural ball to the official ceremony this time round. Bey went all out for the event in a full-length Emilio Pucci gown and Christian Dior coat. Accessorizing the look with a rather dapper Jay-Z in head-to-toe Tom Ford, the singer and her man were nothing less than their usual superstar selves.

The fashion wildcard of the night was definitely Jennifer Hudson however, who stole the spotlight in her LBD. Hudson was invited to serenade President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle during their first dance of the evening, which she did in oh-so-chicly. Looking slim and sexy in the slinky black number, Hudson also managed to impress us by waving the flag for London fashion with her choice of footwear. Wearing divine sparkly platform heels by Charlotte Olympia, the singer/actress was all about the wow-factor at Obama’s second inauguration ball.

Barack Obama Sworn In As U.S. President For A Second Term

Obama Slow Danced His Way into History

The fashion of American politics has become a lot more of a focal point in recent years, with Michelle Obama’s new bangs even being referenced to as “the more significant event of this weekend” by the president. And although we agree that Mrs Obama did steal the spotlight with the help of her striking star-spangled guests, it was most assuredly a monumental moment for President Obama- who slow danced his way into history to the delight of all his stylish supporters.
